1922 Stalin's "autonomization" project

95 years ago, on September 23, 1922, the People's Commissar for Nationalities and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the RCP (b) Stalin presented a project for the "autonomization" of the Soviet republics, which provided for the inclusion of the Transcaucasian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus in the RSFSR as autonomous republics. However, the majority of Politburo members, headed by Lenin, preferred to form a formal federation of the RSFSR and these three republics in the form of the Soviet Union.

In practice, the differences between the two projects were minimal and had only propaganda value. In the USSR, the Communist Party remained united, and the government bodies of the RSFSR actually became all-Union.
