Russian lieutenant general killed in Syria

Lieutenant General Valery Asapov died as a result of a mortar attack by IS militants. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The militants attacked the command post of the Syrian army, where Asapov was located. The general helped manage the operation to liberate the city of Deir ez-Zor and "was mortally wounded by a mine explosion," the ministry said.

“The senior group of Russian military advisers, Lieutenant General V. Asapov, was at the command post of the Syrian troops, assisting the Syrian commanders in managing the operation to liberate the city of Deir ez-Zor,” the Defense Ministry said.
