The far right won more than 13 percent of seats in the Bundestag

The far-right Alternative for Germany party won 94 out of 709 seats in the Bundestag (13.3%). These are the preliminary results of the vote count in the September 24 elections. The turnout was about 76%.

The ruling bloc CDU/CSU won 246 seats (34.7%) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) 153 (21.6%). The Free Democrats received 80 seats (11.3%), the Left 69 (9.7%) and the Greens 67 (9.4%) each.

The Bundestag is formed according to a mixed system: single-member constituencies and party lists. The threshold for parties to enter parliament is 5%.

After the announcement of these exit polls, the SPD announced that they were abandoning a new coalition with the CDU / CSU. Angela Merkel is now expected to have to form the Jamaica coalition, the so-called bloc of the CDU/CSU, Free Democrats and the Greens, because together their colors (black, yellow and green, respectively) resemble the flag of Jamaica.

• Now the German government is formed by a coalition of the CDU / CSU and the SPD. In the last elections in 2013, they received 502 out of 630 mandates and re-elected Angela Merkel to the post of Chancellor.
• Far-right parties have not been represented in the Bundestag since 1961, when the German Party sat there.
