A Russian general was killed in Syria

Lieutenant General Valery Asapov died in Syria as a result of mortar shelling by the Islamic State. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

According to the agency, Asapov helped the Syrian commanders with the operation of the liberation of Deir Ez-Zor. He was at the command post of Syria troops.

The message about the death of the general was the first to transfer the radio station “Speak Moscow” with reference to a source in the headquarters of the 5th Army. According to the interlocutor of the radio station, aimed shelling was carried out at the command station, except Asapov, two colonels were killed under mortar fire. Their names were not specified.

The source of Kommersant said that "the general literally broke, nothing remained of the person, since he was on the forefront." The Ministry of Defense said that Asapov was posthumously presented to a high state award, but did not specify which one. Interfax said that we are talking about the Order of Courage.

Asapov was the deputy commander of the 5th Red Banner Army of the Eastern Military District, in 1995 he served in Chechnya, where he received a severe wound in the leg. Among the awards that he was awarded, the Order of Courage, the Order of Military Merit, Order “Veteran Cross” of the II degree, the medal “For Military Merit”, the Order “For Merits to the Fatherland” of the IV degree.
