Followers of Tablighi Jamaat in Tatarstan have had their sentences reduced

The Supreme Court of Tatarstan commuted the sentence of nine supporters of the Tablighi Jamaat religious organization, which is recognized as extremist in Russia. This is reported by IA "Tatar-inform".

The reason was that the reference to the commission of a crime by a group of persons as an aggravating circumstance was excluded from the verdict.

Ilgiz Zagidullin's term was reduced from 3 years and 9 months to 2 years and 7 months, Lenar Ziyatdinov - from 3 years and 6 months to 2 years and 6 months, Marat Sharifullin - from 3 years 3 months to 2 years 5 months, Salavat Bayazitov and Ramil Sultanov - from 3 years to 2 years 4 months, Renat Nasretdinov - from 2 years 8 months also up to 2 years 4 months, Mubarakzyan Vafin - from 2 years 6 months to 2 years 2 months, Gayar Sudiyarov and Khadyatullo Khasanov - from 2 years up to 1 year 9 months.

They were sentenced on April 20. According to investigators, the convicts joined Tablighi Jamaat in the early 2000s, knowing that the organization was recognized as extremist and banned in Russia. In 2014-2016, the defendants participated in its activities, including by recruiting new members and holding meetings.

The international religious organization Tablighi Jamaat was recognized as extremist in Russia in 2009. According to the SOVA center, this ban was unlawful, since the association is engaged in the propaganda of Islam and was not seen in any calls for violence.
