Let the exotic name not bother you, he is an Englishman, albeit Japanese origin. On the eve of the announcement of the prize at the bookmakers, Haruki Murakami was the leader. They did not guess a little. Also a Japanese, but in a different way.
Literary Nobel has long been accustomed to consider as politically conjunctural. Dali Aleksievich - they want to chase Russia. Dali Dilan-they remembered how he fought for the world in the 1960s. And so on. One of the favorites of 2017 is the South Korean Coon. His laureate would be interpreted very simple: the world against North Korea, for liberalism and freedom.
But Isiguro can’t fit this scheme in this scheme, he is just a writer, a writer as such. The prize has long been not given traditional European prose. The sign of the time that the Japanese wrote it, his book “The Remain of the Day” (1989), awarded the Buker Prize, was called critics “One of the most English novels of the 20th century”. The wording of Stockholm academicians: "For creativity full of great emotional power."
In Russia, Ishiguro was published abundantly. Over the past ten years - seven books: “Where are the hills in the haze”, “The rest of the day”, “When we were orphans”, “Do not let me go”, “inconsolable”, “artist of the shaky world”, “buried giant”. Please note that today these books will appear in stores in prominent places with the Marker Nobel Prize 2017.
And you probably saw the film “At the end of the day” with Anthony Hopkins, who plays a stiff, typically English butler. No one would have thought that the Japanese created this image on paper, but he created.
Ishiguro has a cozy patriarchal style, at least so it sounds in Russian:
“And I carry him back to the canopy and wife, but now he barely rearranges his legs, forcing me to slow down a step too.
“Do not be afraid of the waves, my friend,” I say, believing that this is precisely the source of his anxiety. - The estimate is well protected, and on the way to the island nothing threatens us.
“I willingly trust your opinion.”
Counting and courtesy - like Dr. Watson. In style, this is not even the twentieth century, but the end of the XIX. Life to a disaster.
An important detail: Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki. And although it was nine years after the atomic bombing, but a sense of tragedy, disaster, horror, after which the previous life is impossible, laid out an imprint on everything that he writes. And no English will change this. No wonder each time he returns to the past with an effort of will, as if trying to fix the moment the day before. It's still good, but no longer.
Presentation of the prize to the inactive writer Ishiguro is a sign of time. We feel now the same as his heroes. A second before the disaster.
