1966: Golden canned rock and roll

The thirty -seventh issue of the program "Music at Free" chooses the past as its main topic. Rock Critic Artemy Troitsky is evolving the young generation of listeners and reminds of where the rock and roll grass grew.

Today we will get acquainted with the best, according to John Saved , or, say, the most significant and undeservedly forgotten songs of 1966. Naturally, The Beatles , The Rolling Stones or Bob Dylan did not enter this collection: I think that it is difficult to do with rights there, and then, they all know them ... The artists are represented a little less well -known, but the songs are still journalistic cliches, iconic. The subtitle of the album, also invented by its compiler, sounds like this: "The year that has formed the rest of the century." I mean musically.

And in fact, 1966 - it was such a happy year when one hundred colors bloomed and there was a lot of diverse and, as a rule, in the highest degree of positive music. In particular, the Negro music of Soul was a huge success. The dark -skinned Americans lost the blues, because white performers attacked him with a hungry growl, primarily the British. In return, the African Americans conquered another piece (already pure black pop music) and called it a muzik. The main exhibit Soul Musik was undoubtedly-alas, a decade as a deceased- James Brown . Now I remind you, perhaps the most famous song of Brown, called I Got You (I Feel Good ) - it came out on a single in February 1966.

March 1966 will present the American group The Association ; The team, a representative of the Westcoust Sound style, was very popular in due time. At that time, the center of explosive development of American music began to gradually move from the east coast (New York, Philadelphia, Boston) to West, in Los Angeles and San Francisco. This concept of "sounds of the West Coast" arose, the typical representatives of which were just The Association . Their main hit of that time is Along Comes Mary , "and now Mary appears." This song, by the way, in addition to the March single, was also released on the debut long-play of a group with a similar name- Along Comes Association . Since the psychedelic revolution was just unfolding, they talked a lot about marijuana and other Kurev, and the Along Comes Mary song was regarded by listeners, then hiparies and other alternative youth, like a song about marijuana. That is, Mary is not just an innocent girlish name.

The next number is an absolutely historical group, The Velvet Underground . Lou Read , John Cale , Sterling Morrison , Morin Tucker , Andy Warhol’s employees in his projects Factory , participants in the Exploding Plastic Inevitable show-it was from 1966 to 1967, and then they released their first singles (the legendary debut album of The Velvet Underground was released only in 1967). But already in 1966, in the month of June, a single called I'll Be Your Mirror was released, "I will be your mirror," the composition of Lou Reed. And the permanent soloist of The Velvet Underground sings that time, the German beauty Krista Puffen - Nico . By the way, Andy Warhol himself insist that this song is on the single.

The next summer month-July 1966-represents the American group Love , again from the west coast. The leader of the group is the guitarist Arthur Lee , and this is a real guitar psychedelic music. In the end, the song 7 and 7 is , “seven and seven” turns into continuous cacophony, this is generally a completely atypical little thing for American hit parades, although it rose there to 33rd place. At the end of the song, the sound of a terrible explosion is heard, which is designed to symbolize the gap of a hydrogen bomb. The stereo version of this song is even more effective, it can be found under the name DA Capo on the Love album, which was released in November 1966.

I chose one song from the double collection of John Saveja on the principle of what I had not heard before. Almost all the songs were known to me here, but some turned out to be very pretty - and completely unfamiliar to me. In particular, the Liverpool ensemble that completely sunk into oblivion called Paul & Ritchie & The Cryin 'Shams , and their single Come on Back . The producer of this record is the famous English eccentric Joe Mick . This song did not become any hit, but, in my opinion, a very worthy number.

The next song from the Album 1966: The Year the Decade ExploDed is already a big hit, most likely you heard this composition: the American vocal trio The Supremes led by Diana Ross , the song You Keep Me Hangin 'ON , "You hold me in a suspended state." On the one hand, this is a beautiful pop song in the style of "Soft Soul", on the other hand, the 1966th is a year of protests, performances against racism, a year when the feminist movement broke out, and this song is ideal for such a violent time. Firstly, on the day when this song came out on the record (as it coincided simply), the American Union of Women, the main feminist organization was created. Secondly, the text of this song-frankly, is not quite love, it can rather be regarded as revolutionary. In the chorus, it sings: "Free me, and get out of my life." It was in America, and, in my opinion, in Europe, the number one hit.

Let us recall the subtitle of the album: the 1966th is a year that anticipated all the further musical events of the century. David Bowie debuted a little earlier, in 1964, but it is believed that at the very end of 1966 he presented his first, as many experts believe, a significant song- The London Boys . According to Savej in the comments on the 1966 album, this is the first masterpiece of David Bowie. The song did not become a hit, but the composition is lovely and for Bowie is characteristic, which I suggest you make sure.

It is about this song about London fashionistas, about the London Central Guys, and it contains, for example, such lines: "Having tried a pill for the first time, you definitely felt terribly." That is, we are talking about social vices like drug addiction among young people. If you are interested in this rare song, then it is available on the expanded version of the 1967 David Bowie album, as well as on some collections of early Bowie, so it is not so difficult to get it.
