The Windows Phone project has long been dead, and there is no great secret in this. Journalists noted the death of the platform in January 2016. They pointed out a constant drop in Lumia phone sales and that such phones for the same period of time sold an order of magnitude less than devices on iOS and Android: 110 million versus 4.5 billion (androids plus iPhones).
In 2015 and 2016, Microsoft conducted mass dismissal of employees from mobile units - several thousand people lost their work.
Oddly enough, Windows Phone reached the 2017. In September, Microsoft released an update for the Windows 10 Mobile operating system, in which they found not only error correction, but also a couple of new functions - including two -factor authentication. On the corporation’s website, phones with this system are still sold - four models, including the HP Elite X3 made in October.
However, on October 8, Microsoft Vice President Joe Belfior honestly answered Twitter on several questions about the status of the platform. From his words it becomes obvious that the corporation no longer believes in the future of Windows Phone.
When Belfiore was asked whether it was time to stop using the phone on Windows 10 Mobile, he answered vaguely: “Many companies still give phones to their employees and we will continue to support them!” But after that, Belfior admitted that “as a private user” he already uses the phone on another platform (we are talking about Android, suggests The Verge) - because it provides a variety of applications and devices.
“Of course, we will continue to support the platform [Windows Phone]. Correction of bugs, elimination of safety problems and so on. But adding new functions or devices - outside the focus 😟, ”Belfior wrote.
One of the reasons why the phones on Windows Phone did not take off was a small amount and insufficient quality of applications. Belfior agreed that, for example, Facebook has a “ugly application” that Microsoft cannot independently fix it. And the developers do not want to do something for the mobile Windows 10. “We tried very hard to stimulate the developers of applications,” Belfior said. - They paid money. They wrote applications for them. But the number of users is too small for most companies. ”
At the end of September, the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates announced the rejection of the phone on Windows 10 Mobile: during an interview about Steve Jobs and new iPhones, he said that he switched to Android “with a bunch of Microsoft programs”.
This is the new Microsoft strategy with mobile devices - to release your applications for iOS and Android. These platforms are Word and Excel; Onenote and solitaires . In early October, the corporation also released the mobile version of its EDGE browser.
