The United States has decided to withdraw from UNESCO, the Associated Press reported on Thursday, October 12, citing a representative of the American authorities.
The decision is connected with a series of UNESCO resolutions, which are regarded in Washington as anti-Israel. Agency sources involved in the withdrawal decision added that it is not yet known when the US will formally leave the cultural organization.
The United States stopped funding UNESCO after the organization incorporated Palestine in 2011. Within UNESCO, heated debates have recently flared up over funding and the decision to include Palestine in the organization. Some countries regarded this as another demonstration of the UN's anti-Israel bias.
