Archival project "Radio Liberty this week 20 years ago." The most interesting and significant from the Archive of the Radio Freedom of twenty years ago. Incomplete story. Still living hopes. Could Russia go the other way?
Early the deceased brilliant musician is remembered by his friends and relatives. For the first time on the air of July 9, 1997.
Ivan Tolstoy : On June 9, a year has been fulfilled since the death of Sergei Kurekhin from the rarest disease - heart cancer. Sergei Kurekhin was richly and diversely gifted-a musician, composer, pianist, creator of a new genre called "pop mechanic", which combined happen, show, new jazz, musical tricky shock. In addition, the poet and publisher. In recent years, the eccentric Kurekhin showed the audience with his philosophical and political addictions that pushed many old friends and fans from him. About why this happened is still arguing, and the participants in today's program will try to answer some questions posed by Kurekhin's art. Prepared by today's program in the St. Petersburg Studio "Freedom" Mikhail Berg.
Mikhail Berg : Perhaps, not about anyone, after Shostakovich, they did not repeat so often that he is a genius. Moreover, as in the case of Shostakovich, the glory of Kurekhin came to Russia from abroad. His first record in the late 70s was recorded in Europe, after which they started talking about him as an outstanding composer, and then as a virtuoso pianist. And this is by no means enthusiastic and full skepticism. But he always had little. He played in the ensemble of Vapirov, who performed the avant-garde jazz, then with the “aquarium” Boris Grebenshchikova, with Vladimir Chekasin, Valentina Ponomareva, obviously already bearing the ideas of the future “pop-dies”. These theatrical musical productions (and I remember one of the first on April 12, 1982 in the "Club of Modern Music" at the Palace of Lensovet, after which this club was closed with a scandal) caused a feeling of a new genre that had just been born. Like later, music and Kurekhin show had many hot fans, but no less than bullyers. His fantasy attracted, the destructive pathos scared. So it was to the very end, because, perhaps, these colorful and violent performances were a kind of analogue of our time, eclectic and destructive. Then Sergey Kurekhin was called a genius during his lifetime, he surprised many with his unbridled energy and grandeur of intentions, was charming, almost always shy and mysteriously smiled. Did Kurekhin think about success, did he want glory? Who was he? Composer or showman? Virtuoso-pianist or philosopher? Or maybe Kurekhin is just a foam on the crest of that wave that the end of the century or even the end of the millennium is called? Nastya Kurekhina, the widow of the musician, now the founder of the Fund of his name, talks about the first years of his life.
Nastya Kurekhina, Sergey Kurekhin and their daughter Lisa
Nastya Kurekhina : He was born on June 16, 1954 in the city of Murmansk, since his father was a military sailor, somewhere at the age of four months they moved to Moscow and his childhood passed there. At 8-9 years they moved to the Crimea, and then, when Sergey was 17 years old, they arrived in Leningrad. And then he entered the Institute of Culture. Before that, in the Crimea he graduated from a music school with honors, everyone was very proud of them there, he was very capable of. I don’t even know how many courses he graduated at the Institute of Culture, because for some disagreements with the administration he left there.
Mikhail Berg : Seva Gakkel, who played in the first, still acoustic composition of the Aquarium Boris Grebenshchikov, met Kurekhin in the mid-70s.
Seva Gakkel : It was in 1974, I entered the Rimsky-Korsakov music school, and my friend, such Nikita Zaitsev, a violinist, who later became known for playing the guitar in the DDT group, at that time he played in the St. Petersburg group, and came to take an exam with the concerter. He was Seryozha Kurekhin, who did not rehearse the examination program with him and, having come to the exam at the school, he played the accompaniment from the sheet. None of us did, but that is not the point. All the same, I was delighted with this determination, because at that age, we all were 20 years old, a person could go to such things so easily - go to take the exam without preparing for him.
Mikhail Berg : About how Kurekhin was perceived - Doctor of Medical Sciences Vladimir Volkov, Kurekhin called him "Professor".
Dr. Vladimir Volkov : I am now convinced that it will be very small to call Seryozha a composer, a musician, an actor. Here they say "brilliant composer", "brilliant artist", and Seryozha was a brilliant man, he was so versatile that his genius was manifested in everything. He had his own protection mechanisms, I think, from the world around him, and it seems to me that one of these mechanisms was an ostentatious artificial cynicism.
Seryozha was a brilliant man, he was so versatile that his genius was manifested in everything
But it was not the cynicism of Seryozha Kurekhin, it was a protective reaction from the possibility of rude interference in it. It’s generally very difficult for me to say these words, because I think about it all the time, but I don’t give an interview, I don’t act in the programs about Seryozha, because I have a lot of my personal and now, when someone is talking about Seryozha or when something happens related to Seryozha, I want to say: raise your head! It seems to me that he sits in the corner and pulls: "Well, Vovchik, you arrived."
Mikhail Berg : Art critic Alina Alonso.
Alina Alonso : At that time, although we say that he belonged to unofficial culture, he was an official musician at a headquarters and he played in the ensemble of Anatoly Vapirov. They played jazz, but Kurekhin, as much as possible, brought an element of the avant -garde there, so it was the most modern of ensembles.
Mikhail Berg : In the St. Petersburg Studio Radio, Freedom Boris Grebenshchikov recalls the first meetings with Sergey Kurekhin.
Boris Grebenshchikov : Generally speaking, I knew about him for a long time, and we intersected in the early 70s, because there was simply nowhere to go, the circle was not so wide. And then someone invited me to call Seryozha so that he would put our crazy arrangements in order, because I wanted a lot, but how to do it very little to myself. I desperately needed a professional with the understanding of what we were doing, who would work on the same wave, and it turned out that Seryozha turned out to be not only such a professional, but that his understanding extended much further much further than mine, and he added more than one dimension, but somewhat to what we did. In addition to professionalism, our rather timid stage of madness was strengthened by its madness, his sense of humor, and the combination was, from my point of view, perfectly explosive. That is, together we did things that, I think, we would never have done, we would never have been able to do it.
Mikhail Berg : The musician Vladimir Volkov, a participant in the famous duet Volkov-Gavoronsky, I asked: was Kurekhin really a brilliant pianist?
Musician Vladimir Volkov : I just didn’t think so. Yes, the technique, the fluidity of the fingers was very good, but then I already noticed a very strange thing - Seryozha did not like to play the notes, he said: "Why is this?" It was much more interesting for him to do something himself, he was given a certain niche and he plays. That's why he did not begin to do something with Vapirov, but with Chekasin, because the Chekasin gave more freedom and, in principle, their searches were, I think, parallel.
Mikhail Berg : The future musical theater of Sergei Kurekhin, called by him "pop mechanic", was born from ordinary conversations, home concerts, parties. Alina Alonso recalls.
Alina Alonso : It was very interesting to talk to him. The greatest charm is communication with Kurekhin. Whether he talked with the musicians, his friends, or with writers, they always talked very interestingly, this is what later entered the "pop-mechanic". Some Serezhins are unique speeches, when it has already become known, and before it was all worked out in the evenings in their friendly company when they were fooling around. He expressed some paradoxical thoughts, gaming, absurd, Kurekhin sometimes fooling around, sang some songs on the piano, such as “I return your portrait”, or he played “Hare Krishna”, and then so unobtrusively, imperceptibly translated it to the motive of the “meat-eater”. In principle, these things, which later have already entered the "pop-mechanical". He anticipated that all this would be useful to him, and this was for friendly communication everything was sanded.
Sergey Kurekhin and Boris Grebenshchikov
Mikhail Berg : However, the transition from pianism to the "pop-mechanical" was far from simple. About this period is the poet Arkady Dragmoshchenko.
Arkady Dragomoshchenko : Then there was an amazing, completely crisis moment, because he moved from the pianist to the world of what is now called the show. It was a show in huge brackets.
Mikhail Berg : His opinion about why Sergey Kurekhin from the pianist turned to the creation of a musical show, Boris Grebenshchikov’s.
Boris Grebenshchikov : It seems to me that Seryozha was not yet satisfied with what was happening in the musical world, and tried in this way, for lack of a creative moment, to emphasize the moment of destruction of the existing stamps, from which, from my point of view, he was, of course, an unsurpassed fighter, because a person who would fight more with any vile, even in a combination of notes, I do not remember. He was an irreconcilable, desperate, barricade fighter with everything that seemed to him by a stamp, vulgarity or something else, so we often had disputes or a complete musical misunderstanding, reaching the discord. Because it was not clear to him why to do such, from his point of view, vulgarity and stamps as what the Aquarium was doing.
Mikhail Berg : Of course, the first "pop-mechanics" were a challenge, shocking, and almost always ended with a scandal. About his impressions - musician Vladimir Volkov.
Musician Vladimir Volkov : It was, in principle, also such an “mechanic”, where, in fact, there was almost no show. Well, Seryozha ran, jumped, beat on the keys more diligently than ordinary pianists, something was with water, in my flute in water, elements that were then still impermissible. After the concert, we went down to the artistic, one figure came, unfortunately, I do not remember his name, the Smolensk underground man, a party -goer, a dissident who constantly accompanied such concerts, came to such festivals specifically. He ran after the concert, he was wildly exhausted in comparison with us (well, we played and played), ran, began to run around this room, almost knocking down the same Kurekhin and shouted: "These are all half -dead! This is not enough! It was necessary to fill this scene with the fire extinguisher! It was necessary to set fire!" The man filled the whole space of this room. I think maybe then there was a kind of impulse for Sergey. For some reason it seemed to me.
Mikhail Berg : About how the poets and musicians lived in the early 70s, when it was still far from future glory - Arkady Dragmoshchenko.
Arkady Dragomoshchenko : Imagine, Sasha Kobak lives, now the director of the Baltic Fund, he lived in a wooden house next to Nastya Furssey, where Seryozha Kurekhin lived then. I come to visit Sasha Kobaku, and an hour later I should go on TV "Sherlock Holmes". I call Seryozha Kurekhin: "Old man, will you watch Sherlock Holmes?" He says: "Of course, we are going to watch Sherlock Holmes immediately!" He didn’t have a TV, they come running, we buy Hungarian champagne, as I remember now - nine bottles, buy three chicken, freeze champagne and then sit on the floor and watch this endless Sherlock Holmes in a black and white TV.
Mikhail Berg : But quite unexpectedly, perestroika began and the musical avant -garde came to the surface. Concerts in the district houses of culture were replaced by prestigious sites such as the Oktyabrsky hall, and then it became possible to go abroad with tour. The period of glory "pop-mechanics" began, from a purely avant-garde action, it turned into a fairly profitable commercial enterprise. About that, Sergey Kurekhin, I asked his manager Sergei Selivanov, was somewhat practical and calculating.
Sergey Selivanov : Sergey was not practical, it was no doubt. But the tour was commercial. At the same time, the roles were shared as follows: Sergey was engaged in the creative side, and the administrator and director Lesha Ershov, and me, were engaged in the financial side.
The period of glory "pop-mechanics" began, from a purely avant-garde action, it turned into a fairly profitable commercial enterprise
Sergei usually painted the picture of the future spectacle with wide strokes, absolutely not thinking about how much it could cost whether the organizers would go to this or not. Top helicopters and airplanes, in the sea - the fleet, the military march here, here - firefighters, here they are dancing, they jump there, and so on. And to such an extent, he could develop this extremely in detail and he usually ended with the fact that all questions about how to practically do it and money - this is all to the director, here to the administrators.
Mikhail Berg : Vladimir Volkov often took part in the foreign tour of Kurekhin. He recalls a concert in Berlin dedicated to Dmitry Shostakovich.
Musician Vladimir Volkov : Academy of Der Kunst arranged a very pathos project dedicated to Shostakovich in Berlin. The idea of the play was - Shostakovich’s split: Shostakovich - conformist, Shostakovich - avant -garde. It was a very harsh test for me, I can even say that I was a little offended by Sergey at some point during this “mechanics” because it began with a wild roar, it was the “eighth symphony” of Shostakovich, the hall was immersed in the darkness, hung a flag, stood a reactive turbine, which was blew on this flag, it was consecrated by a fabric, and after this roar, and after this roar. Everything stops and I have to play solo at the smugus. I played about five minutes. But can you imagine my feeling? He did not warn me, said that "there will be music at first, they will play a little entry, and then you will play solo."
Mikhail Berg : A few years before his death, Kurekhin, unexpectedly for many, declared himself a supporter of Alexander Dugin, co-chair, along with Eduard Limonov, National Bolshevik Party. Dugin was a philosopher with non-conformist past, knowledge of several European languages, well-oriented in modern Western European philosophy, mainly right-wing and extremist. Kurekhin became a confidant of Dugin as a candidate for deputies of the Duma, and also invited Limonov and Dugin to participate in the concerts of his “pop-mechanicals”, where Limonov spoke about the angels, to whom he ranked his associates, Dugin entertained the hall with mystical exrases, and Kurekhin himself sang a song of Okudzhava, “We all need all the victory, we do not have one victory at a price. Start. " This caused bewilderment not only for many of his fans, but also among the closest friends. They talked about the crisis of the genre, the dead end and the creative crisis of the artist. The most friendly believed that Dugin and National Bolshevism are just a material for the new “pop-mechanics”, like Edita Pieha in cellophane and the firefighters team, others believed that Kurekhin began to play and laid a dangerous line. Of course, Kurekhin’s romantic passion affected the unusual passion here. In Dugin, he was attracted by the extremism of an educated person, but not only.
Almost from the very beginning in Kurekhin as an artist, the avant -garde played with a postmodernist. He began as an avant-garde, composing avant-garde music, playing avant-garde jazz along with Vapirov, but, unsatisfied with the results, comes to the parody postmodern manner of Pop Mechanics, which destroys stamps and stereotypes in search of catharsis. But Kurekhin was never a pure artist, art for the sake of art did not satisfy him, postmodern quotes were only a technique. The avant -garde, a person trying to transform the world with the help of art, lived in it. This was his strength. We also lurked here. He longed for the reorganization of the world and, no matter how he evaluate his romance with Dugin and National Bolshevism, it was in this that his avant-garde addictions most clearly affected. The music of the "pop-mechanicals" was supposed to change people, society, and neither people nor society had to change, and then he tried to use not music, but a word, and with a propaganda shower. For the reputation of Kurekhin Artist, the 1995-96 sample alliance with Dugin was a blow, but for today's understanding of Kurekhin’s mystery, his creative method, this story is an opening that it remains closed without it. Kurekhin wanted not just fame, including scandalous, he was not a showman, did not want to entertain and delight the audience, he sincerely longed for the transformation. He owned many techniques of contemporary art, but archaic and avant -garde aspirations lurked in it. This seriousness was undoubtedly felt by those who tried to penetrate the meaning of his work and, perhaps, he was especially appreciated for this. Although the disputes about why Kurekhin needed the National Bolshevik Dugin still do not subside. Here is the opinion of Boris Grebenshchikov.
Boris Grebenshchikov : In my opinion, knowing him for more than a dozen years, it seems to me that he was more and more disappointed.
Here is such an answer.
