On Thursday, October 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at a meeting of the Valdai discussion club in Sochi. In his speech, mainly devoted to foreign policy, Putin once again criticized Western countries. Republic briefly tells what exactly the West was accused of the president.
The situation in Catalonia, as well as in Iraqi Kurdistan, became the result of double standards of Western countries. According to the President of the Russian Federation, this behavior "is fraught with a serious danger to the development of Europe." The President of the Russian Federation recalled that the EU countries behaved differently in the situation with Kosovo and Crimea.
“And why it was necessary so thoughtlessly, based on the political current conjuncture, the desire to please, frankly, to the older brother from Washington, unconditionally support the department of Kosovo, provoking such processes in other regions of Europe, and in the world. <...> When Crimea, for example, also announced independence, and then as a result of a referendum on accession to Russia, for some reason this was already not liked, ”said Putin.
In the Middle East, the actions of “some countries” are aimed at maintaining instability and simulating the fight against terrorism instead of a real struggle with it. Russia, in turn, helps to normalize the situation in the region with its “neat and balanced” actions.
“The Syrian experience just shows that there is an alternative to self -confident and destructive policy. Russia is opposed by terrorists along with the legal government of Syria and with other states of the region, acts on the basis of international law, ”Putin emphasized.
The situation around the DPRK should be solved by dialogue, and not "threats and rudeness." Russia “certainly condemns” nuclear trials that Pyongyang conducts, but calls for a “civilized” solution to the problem.
“Whether someone likes the North Korean regime or not like, we must not forget that the DPRK is a sovereign state. Any contradictions must be decided in a civilized manner, ”said the President of the Russian Federation.
The President of the Russian Federation recalled the role of the UN in the world: according to him, the organization "with its universal legitimacy should remain the center of the international system." At the same time, Putin noted that although some forces have repeatedly tried to control the UN, they failed.
“Over the past decades, there have been several attempts to belittle the role of this organization, to discredit it or simply put control. All these attempts predictably failed or came to a standstill, ”Putin said.
In his speech, Putin also noted that it was the Western countries, first of all, that benefited from the 1917 revolution. The president said that the achievements of the West in the 20th century actually occurred due to the victory of communism in Russia.
“Many Western achievements of the 20th century were the answer to the call from the USSR. <...> Improving the standard of living, the formation of a powerful middle class, reform of the labor market and social sphere, the development of education and human rights guarantees, including the rights of national minorities and women, overcoming racial segregation, which several decades ago was a shameful practice in many countries, including the United States, ”said Putin.
