Prime Minister of Spain: the Catalan government will be dissolved and the parliament will be re-elected

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that as part of the limitation of the autonomy of Catalonia, the government of the region will be dissolved and the parliament re-elected. Their powers will be transferred to the central authorities, Rajoy announced after a cabinet meeting on October 21.

The Spanish government wants to introduce such measures within the framework of Article 155 of the Constitution, which allows the suspension of autonomy in cases where regional authorities violate the law and threaten the interests of the whole country.

To restore order in Catalonia, parliamentary elections will be held within six months, which will then approve a new government.

It is expected that the government's request to limit the powers of the Catalan authorities will be supported by the Spanish Senate on October 27 and will come into force the next day.

“No country in the world would allow such a situation [with a unilateral declaration of independence],” Rajoy said.
