Sergey Medvedev: Today we celebrate the anniversary of our old good acquaintance - Soviet man. A simple Soviet man, Homo Soveticus - in fact, his anniversary coincides with the anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, one of the goals of which was the construction of a new type of personality. About this in the plot of Anton Smirnov .
Anton Smirnov: The twentieth century was marked by projects with the prefix "Mega". Megazavods, megbombs, megastations were built, cities expanded, megava and megaprojects began.
The new time also required a new person
The new time also required a new person. They should have become a "Soviet man", a megacheum, completely belonging to the authorities. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia gave the following definition to the phenomenon: "The historical, social and international community of people who have a single territory, economics, socialist in content culture, a union, national state and a common goal - the construction of communism." This quote sounds like the manifestation of a great idea, but many super -projects of the twentieth century could not wait for their completion. The construct of "Soviet identity", which was built on the broken lives of entire peoples, was waiting for the same fate. The colossus of the "Soviet" man, when falling, broke into hundreds of identities and conflicts between them, which still smolder in the post -Soviet space.
Sergey Medvedev: So who is this - a Soviet man? What are its characteristic features? Was he as such, or is it a certain product of the imagination of sociologists and ideologists? Is he alive today? We are talking about this with our guests-this is Leonid Gozman, political scientist, president of the Perspective Foundation, and Lev Gudkov, sociologist, director of Levada Center . Leo, as I understand it, you have been conducting such research for almost 30 years. And, in fact, was there a separate Soviet person as such?
Lev Gudkov: Let's see what it is. As an ideological project, as a slogan it was nominated in the mid-1920s. But I would say that this is a Bolshevik re -interpretation of a much earlier project of a futuristic, avant -garde new person, which appears at the beginning of the twentieth century, primarily in Italian, German and partly Russian futurists. The Bolsheviks used it for their own purposes. This is both an ideological project and material for the construction of a new unprecedented society. This can also be found among American federalists who conceived a project of a completely unprecedented new society.
Sergey Medvedev: Then you go on a very interesting topic - this is an educational utopia.
In each of the totalitarian regimes, a new person has its own project
Lev Gudkov: Partly-yes, because the founding fathers, of course, thought American society as an unprecedented test for humanity and the only chance to build a completely new society. If this does not succeed, then the whole history of mankind is meaningless. In this sense, this is a really long tradition of such a Homo novus (new person).
Sergey Medvedev: But adapted to a political project.
Lev Gudkov: And in each of the totalitarian regimes there is a new person’s project: the Nazis, and the Chinese, and the Cubans, and all the others.
Sergey Medvedev: And the Nazi ideologists, still returning to Nietzsche?
Lev Gudkov: Well, of course: the idea of a superman ... The most important thing is that this person arises along with the totalitarian institutions that he forms. Without this, he remains an ideological slogan.
And the meaning of the research project is to look at what the people have left from him, how mass consciousness worked with him and, accordingly, what are the mechanisms of interaction between the slogan, ideological practices, violence and everyday life, as all this was already combined in mass behavior.
Generally speaking, all the processes of modernization of society put forward their project of a new person. An engineer in technical utopias, a Weberian new type of Protestant entrepreneur or some other projects from the entire many social human types put forward the one that was most characteristic of the spirit of time. So this is not a random, not a separate type, but a whole spectrum ...
Sergey Medvedev: ... social and anthropological engineering.
All processes of modernization of society put forward their project of a new person
Lev Gudkov: Design - let's say.
Sergey Medvedev: Leonid, and for you a Soviet person is a scientific or evaluative category? So I looked at the story of the term: it arises in Sergey Bulgakov . In 1918, he wrote: "Homo socialist." Then it passes through Sharikov, and this is already canonized. In recent times, this is the 1982 Zinoviev dissident book, published in Munich. From this point of view, what is it? Is this an ideological, or rather, evaluative construct?
Leonid Gozman: both. When they say "scoop" - of course, this is an evaluative word. But in fact, it is important whether there is some reality behind this. For the Bolsheviks, this was not just a condition for the creation of a new Soviet person, but a condition for the success of a common project. This is one of the goals of the project. They set at least four goals: a new economy, a fundamentally different structure of society, a fundamentally different political system of society management and a new person, and a new person was very important for them. Trotsky, for example, had such an idea that the entire population of Soviet Russia should be carried out through psychoanalysis in order to make a new person. He really believed in psychoanalysis. Then Freud was very actively published with us.
They believed in the possibility of changing. And until the last days of the existence of the Communist Party of the USSR, this idea of educating a person was in their software documents. They saw themselves with such demiurges, and this was one of the main goals. Moreover, interestingly, the first three projects: economics, social structure of society, politics, obviously failed. There were only ruins on which something had to be rebuilt. And this is not very clear - failed or not? I think that it did not quite fail.
Leo rightly said that this does not work without a totalitarian society. Of course, to create a new person, you need control of a person. And they did everything in order to control. From a purely pragmatic point of view, what difference does it make for you, what kind of music do the subjects listen to? No! And by the way, they were right. After all, if you choose the music that you want today, then maybe tomorrow you are going to choose something else. This is risky: if you choose a hairstyle or width of trousers, dudes, then what do you want to choose tomorrow today? Unknown!
The Bolsheviks believed in the possibility of changing
It seems to me that it is impossible to talk about the Soviet man as a common or total reality. You can always show Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachev, a bright memory to him, and say: "Well, what kind of Soviet man is he?! The traditional Russian intellectual."
Sergey Medvedev: As Yuz Aleshkovsky said: "As there is a separate sausage, there are individual people."
Leonid Gozman: In any system there are all human types. The Soviet man can be found in Washington, in Paris, and in Moscow, and Tambov, and in Beijing.
Sergey Medvedev: But there is a "average temperature in the hospital", there is a law of typification.
Leonid Gozman: Of course. It is important what human type the system relies on. Here it helps someone to grow, and someone, on the contrary, interferes or represses. And so they relied on a certain type.
Lev Gudkov: They raised it, since it was still the formation of certain institutions-school, army, ideological work, and communication systems.
This concept has been in use from about the mid-70s, after the release of George Smirnov’s “Soviet Personality” was released. But it was an attempt to ideologically summarize the entire project. Generally speaking, by that time it became clear that it was a project, an ideological slogan diverging with reality. The first attempt to analyze this person was made not by Zinoviev, but by the German Claus Menert , an adviser to Adenauer, who came here. His book Sowjetische Mensch was published (her first edition was in 1958), where he just tried to see where the slogan is, where is ideological practice and what comes of it. And he was the first to record the discrepancies. And then the parodies of Zinoviev, Vail, Genis, Sinyavsky, which have already recorded the late phase of the decomposition of this.
Now about what the slogan consisted of. This is a selfless, ideological, directed into the future, ascetic (he sacrifices everything for the future), collectivist. But reality never corresponded to the slogan. Moreover, very soon, despite all violence, the regime realized that this was an unrealized thing, and was forced to get along and allow different tolerance systems. And the further, the more tolerances and backlash were. Already in the 60s it became clear that this project was not fundamentally implemented. And now, in fact, on the system of double -huminology, discrepancies and all practice was built.
Sergey Medvedev: In my opinion, the 60s is just the time of human optimism, when the country is freed from Stalinism and an ethical wave appears. I immediately want to recall the "Squoked Bochkotar" Vasily Aksenov, the film "July Rain" ...
Reality never corresponded to the slogan
Lev Gudkov: If you recall (a little earlier) “Star Ticket” or “Colleagues”, then this was already a longing for that and the fixation of the discrepancy between life and some ideal. This begins precisely from that time. If you look "three days in the life of Viktor Chernyshev", then it is more stronger and stronger: "Afonya", "Flights in a dream and in reality" - this is an increasingly discrepancy between the slogan and everyday life.
In general, if we talk about the basis of the Soviet man, then this is a person who has learned to live with a repressive state, entering into corruption transactions with him, getting rid of, deceiving: “They pretend that they pay us, and we pretend that we work,” “everyone is against, but all for” and so on. This is a system of doubles, mutual adaptation, crawler: Tatyana Zaslavskaya called this "crafty slave". This is a mutual playback of power and man. Without personal subsidiary plots, no planned economy would have resisted. There are a lot of all sorts of things, but the most important thing is the type of person that was formed under the influence of totalitarian institutions. He is not total.
Lev Gudkov
Of course, our research is already the end, this person is leaving. Or, more precisely, he is on the verge of departure, so in a sense it is an archetype reconstruction. If you look at the first measurement, then, of course, this is the perfect type in the Weber sense. In a concentrated form, it is characteristic of 35-40% of the population, because next to this person, crafty, adapted, there are dogmas, and functionaries, careerists, workshops, and a lot of other types. The community is built from different roles and different human types. But the regime, the system kept this type, and the idea of Yuri Levada was that with the departure of this person the regime collapsed.
Sergey Medvedev: To what extent was the Soviet man a collection of certain positive myths, an expression of the spirit of his time? Maybe nostalgia for it has been preserved in our time? This is evidenced by the collector of Soviet memoralia Sergei Chibineev .
In the Soviet years, my country was Soviet, and I was Soviet
Sergey Chibineev: I am somewhat surprised by the attention of Radio Freedom to my person. My first acquaintance with him took place when I was 14 years old. In the 70s, I accidentally heard this little with the hoarseness of the leader. When they read the "Gulag" Solzhenitsyn, the presenter was delighted with a little boy who was sitting in the camp for cutting parachutes at a parachute factory. And since then I have always turned this radio station, because there was a frank anti -Soviet. This all went to the detriment of my state in which I lived, worked, studied, which allowed me to live freely, freely receive education, freely climb a social elevator. This can be called blessings that many young people are now deprived of.
This concept impresses me - "Soviet man." And I believe that the attempts to create precisely the Soviet man, that is, people of different nationalities that are united by any one idea were correct. The idea, in fact, is noble-the construction of a happy future, deprived of some religious views. Now, as we see, there is a mass religious conflict that leads to wars, murders and so on.
The idea itself was interesting. And, I think, some foundations that have been laid are preserved even now for many people of my generation. Some with foam at the mouth protect the conquest of the so -called socialism, which, unfortunately, was not ... although, perhaps, it was built. I don't know. Someone is critical of this, someone with irony.
I always felt like Russian, and then a Russian. In the Soviet years, my country was Soviet, and I was Soviet. But this is my view. I perceived and displayed precisely the views on which they raised me. I will never be an enemy of these new trends, the new development of my country. But, of course, I already look at everything that happens, from the perspective of a 16-20-year-old boy, who was brought up by Soviet society at school, and then at the institute.
Sergey Medvedev: Is the Soviet man really a modernization product, a kind of modernization experiment?
Lev Gudkov: Of course, this is a specific product, catching up with modernization, conducted by a totalitarian system. This is a person without the complexity, diversity, autonomization that were in other systems. Here this is a mass -shaped, one -dimensional person. And in this sense, this is not an ethnic characteristic. This is not a Russian person, because exactly the same type is described by Polish, Gader and other sociologists.
Sergey Medvedev: This is a person with a large repressive state.
A Soviet man is a person who has learned to live with a repressive state, entering into corruption transactions with him, getting along, deceiving
Lev Gudkov: Yes, that’s right.
Sergey Medvedev: You said that a Soviet person is a person who has learned to live with a repressive state. But did the Russian person with a repressive state have lived for the past 500 years? And is the Russian culture in general the fruit of adaptation to this repressive state?
Lev Gudkov: The further I am engaged in this topic, the more it seems to me that it is necessary to trace the genealogy of this type much deeper. Well, the features described some features, say, Shchedrin: the structure of double-heart, adaptation. But still, this is not the beginning of a massive society, it was an estate society, so it is impossible to pull it completely deep into it.
Sergey Medvedev: Leonid, can we put the Soviet man in this large Russian historical vertical and trace it from the times of Mongol slavery, serfdom? This is a slave man, a slave state, which is recorded by fairy tales, Russian folklore.
Leonid Gozman: Yes, and no, because the slave state here is more important than ethnicity. If we take those states and peoples that passed through this centuries -old slavery, as we passed, then there you can see very similar features. Of course, what Saltykov-Shchedrin and de Custine wrote!
Of course, these features were. Of course, no Nikolai I dreamed of bringing this project to the level that the Bolsheviks brought it to - simply because the level of totalitarianism was much lower. When Paul I tried to order when to dine and what hats to wear, it ended not good for him, because society did not accept this.
Sergey Medvedev: It worked partly. I’m reading about military settlements now. They also go from Alexander, and then Arakcheevsky. Here is an ideal enlightening person!
Leonid Gozman: In Russian times, there were enclaves of a totalitarian society - for example, military settlements. And the whole Empire, of course, only Comrade Stalin, his predecessors and followers managed to turn into such a military settlement. But I am against considering the Bolsheviks just a gang that was holding on to power. Of course, they were such a gang, but not only. They still had certain ideas.
Sergey Medvedev: Well, of course. They infected the whole world.
The system -forming property of the Soviet person is to work out of time
Leonid Gozman: Yes, they did not infect! This microbe was everywhere. We just were the first to be in a state of serious illness. But some still managed to avoid it.
Sergey Medvedev: There is such a theory that Russia, due to the unlimitedness of its spaces and power, realizes ideas that exist in the West as an embryo, and here they unfold in full - atheism, communism ...
Leonid Gozman: But this is important. The founding fathers of our state considered this a certain value. Either the brewers, or the Buldakov (two outstanding historians)-one of them said that the "system-forming property of the Soviet person is to work out of time." The Bolsheviks divorced labor and reward for work. These are different things. And ideally, you must plow like Pope Carlo, not thinking how much they will pay you for it. Uncle, what are you building? Communism! Free work of freely gathered people! Free work! Here is a subbotnik - this is the ideal of future labor.
No!
Leonid Gozman
No!
