1942 Beginning of the Battle of El Alamein

75 years ago, on October 23, 1942, the Battle of El Alamein in Egypt began between the German-Italian army of Erwin Rommel and the British troops of Bernard Montgomery. It ended on November 5 with the complete defeat of the Axis powers. The British had almost two times the superiority in tanks and one and a half in people. Rommel lost 25 thousand people killed and wounded and 35 thousand prisoners. Montgomery's losses amounted to about 14 thousand people.

The Battle of El Alamein is considered one of the decisive battles of World War II, as its outcome predetermined the defeat of the Axis forces in North Africa.
