The court suggested looking for a more serious charge for the coordinator of Navalny’s headquarters in Volgograd. He is accused of desecrating the Motherland

The court returned for additional investigation the criminal case of the head of the Volgograd headquarters, Alexei Navalny, Alexei Volkov, accused of rehabilitating Nazism. According to Volkov, the judge came to the conclusion that there are grounds for qualifying the case under a more serious article. According to Volkov, the prosecutor's office opposed the reclassification of the case.

Volkov was charged because of the publication of a collage, which depicted a memorial to the Motherland with a face painted over with green paint. The case is being investigated under Part 3 of Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (desecration of symbols of military glory committed in public). The punishment for this part is a fine of up to 300 thousand rubles or correctional labor for up to one year.

In a commentary to Mediazone, Volkov suggested that the case could be reclassified as Part 2 of Article 244 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of a sculptural, architectural structure dedicated to the fight against fascism or victims of fascism). This article provides for punishment of up to five years in prison.

• An image of the Motherland with its face painted over with green paint was published in a group of supporters of Alexei Navalny in March, after the attack, during which Navalny was splashed with green paint in his face and injured his eye. The picture was soon deleted, a post was written in public with an apology.
