Human rights activist Emir-Usein Kuku remains in custody

A participant in the Yalta case of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Emir-Usein Kuku, was left in custody by the Supreme Court of Crimea, approving the decision of the court of first instance to extend the arrest. The criminal case against Emir-Usein Kuku, Enver Bekirov, Vadim Siruk and Muslim Aliyev was transferred to the prosecutor's office. All four were arrested in February 2016 after searches in the homes of Crimean Tatars. According to Novaya Gazeta, the detentions and searches were brutal, the police broke doors and windows, and one of the detainees had a bag put over his head. Later, Rifat Alimov and Arsen Dzhepparov, whom the investigation also considers members of the Yalta cell of Hizb ut-Tahrir, were arrested.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. Cases of terrorism have been opened in different regions of the country, while members of the cells of the organization are accused and sentenced to various terms in a strict regime colony only on the basis that they met in apartments, read religious literature and recruited new members.
