Elon Musk will build a plant in Shanghai. In China, 180 thousand electric vehicles were sold in six months, in Russia - 29.

Elon Musk has agreed with the Chinese authorities on the construction of a Tesla plant in the free economic zone of Shanghai. China is the world's largest market for electric vehicles. The new factory will allow Tesla to dramatically reduce costs and solve the eternal problems with production volume.

• Tesla is the first Western automaker that managed to agree on the construction of a 100% own plant: until now, China required the mandatory creation of joint ventures with local players. But such a scheme would put Tesla's patents and technology at risk.
• China surpassed the United States in sales of electric vehicles back in 2015, and the government subsidizes their production. In 2016, 350 thousand electric vehicles were sold in China, in the first half of 2017 - 180 thousand. By 2025, sales should rise to 7 million per year.

• Since 2019, the Chinese government has required all automakers to include electric vehicles in their model lineup. In the future, officials are discussing a ban on the sale of cars with internal combustion engines.
• Tesla currently has only one factory in California. This year, the company began producing its first mass model, the Model 3, and immediately encountered delays in deliveries of the vehicle, for which 500,000 pre-orders had been made. In the third quarter, Tesla produced 260 vehicles instead of the planned 1,500.

What's in it for me?

In Russia, the market and infrastructure for new electric vehicles will not appear soon. In the first half of 2017, we sold 29 new electric vehicles, and 83 for the entire 2016. Their entire fleet in the country is about 1,000 cars, compared to a million in China. Tesla's plans in Russia are so far limited to five official Supercharger charging stations, which the company put on its map back in 2014, but has not yet opened.
