The remarkable English writer Herbert Ernest Bates was born in 1905 in the small town of Rushden (Northamptonshire); there he spent the first twenty years of his life. That same year, the Carnegie Public Library opened in Rushden, where Bates was a regular reader for many years. A hundred years later, the centenary of Bates's birth was celebrated throughout England, and in Rushden the centenary of the opening of the library was also celebrated.
