The leader of Catalonia Carles Puchdemon refused to invite on October 26 in the Senate of Spain with an explanation of the situation regarding the independence of the region.
According to Reuters with reference to the representative of the Catalan government, Puchdemon’s decision is caused by the fact that the Spanish government has already announced its intention to introduce direct rule in Catalonia in order to prevent its independence.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Minister of Economy of Spain Luis de Gindos said that in the case of the separation of Catalonia, it would be outside the European Union and the eurozone. Speaking on Wednesday in parliament, the minister noted that the investigation will become significant economic damage, as a result of which the rates of economic growth can decrease by 25-30 percent, the level of inflation and unemployment will increase.
The leaders of the Catalan separatists believe that the referendum held on October 1 provided the region of the mandate for independence, since more than 90 percent of its participants supported this idea. However, Puchdemon decided to postpone the proclamation of independence and called on Madrid to the dialogue. The central government declared the referendum illegal and abandoned the dialogue, nevertheless inviting the head of autonomy to perform in the Senate.
On Friday, the Senate plans to deprive the powers of the head of Catalonia and introduce a direct rule in autonomy. The Catalan authorities said they would ignore any steps of Madrid in this direction.
