Madrid dissolves Catalonia's government and parliament

The government and parliament of Catalonia are dissolved by decision of the Spanish cabinet. This was announced on the evening of October 27 by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

He added that early parliamentary elections will be held on December 21, after which the deputies will appoint a new regional government.

In addition to the dissolution of the entire government of Catalonia, the head of the local police (Mossos), Josep Luis Trapero, was removed from his post.

• Earlier on October 27, the Catalan Parliament adopted a declaration of independence from Spain. After that, the Spanish Senate approved the initiative of the country's government to introduce direct rule in the region.
• The Catalan crisis began after the October 1 referendum on the independence of the region, which was not recognized by Madrid. By the referendum, the forces of the national police and the Civil Guard were introduced into the region, which clashed with the protesters.
