Spanish Prime Minister dissolves Parliament and Government of Catalonia

Early elections to the regional parliament are scheduled for December 21.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Spain has dissolved the parliament and government of Catalonia, announced Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Early elections to the Catalan Parliament will be held on December 21. After this, deputies will appoint a new regional government.

Earlier on October 27, the Catalan parliament voted for independence from Spain after Madrid refused to hold early elections. After this, the Spanish Senate approved the government's request to transfer Catalonia under direct control.

According to Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, the government has the right to appoint its representative and remove the parliament and government of Catalonia. This is possible if the autonomous region threatens the interests of the state and violates the law.
