The Senate is expected to appoint a new leader for the region on October 27.
The Catalan Parliament voted in favor of a resolution declaring independence from Spain. “for” 72 deputies voted , 10 “against”, two abstained, and the rest boycotted the vote. There are 135 deputies in parliament.
Parliament held the vote the day after regional head Carles Puigdemont refused to hold early elections at the request of Madrid.
In response to the declaration of independence, Madrid intends to introduce direct rule in Catalonia. A vote on this issue is due to take place in the Spanish Senate on October 27.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said after the declaration of independence that he would restore legality in the region and called on all Spaniards to “be calm.”
in Catalonia On October 1, a referendum was held for independence from Spain. About 2.3 million people took part in it; 90% were in favor of secession from the European country. During the referendum, the Spanish police prevented residents of Catalonia from voting and used special equipment, 800 people were injured . After the end of the voting, Rajoy declared that the referendum had not taken place.
