The Catalonia Parliament on October 27 voted in a resolution declaring the independence of the region from Spain. After that, the Senate of Spain allowed Prime Minister Mariano Rahu to apply the 155th article of the Constitution, which limits the autonomy of Catalonia. In accordance with this article, the Parliament and the Government of Catalonia were dissolved, the head of the region was appointed first deputy Rahaya Sarai Saans de Santamaria.
A referendum was held in Catalonia on October 1, at which 90% of the participants (with a turnout of about 42%) spoke out for the department from Spain. The Supreme Court of Spain and the government of the country recognized the referendum illegal.
Puchdemon immediately after the referendum signed a declaration of the independence of Catalonia, but at the same time suspended its entry into force. He also invited Madrid to negotiate the independence of the region.
