PARNAS proposes coalition to Navalny, Sobchak and Yavlinsky
Mikhail Kasyanov's People's Freedom Party has announced that it is ready to nominate Alexei Navalny, Ksenia Sobchak, and Grigory Yavlinsky as candidates for President of Russia.
"The coalition agrees that in December all three candidates will be nominated at party congresses or voter group meetings. In the event that any of the nominated candidates is denied primary registration, the coalition will conduct a joint civil protest campaign," the party said in a statement .
According to the plan, the coalition should work together to collect voters' signatures. And if none of the candidates are officially registered, PARNAS will declare the elections illegitimate and call for an "active boycott."
If the authorities register more than one candidate, the coalition will determine a single candidate for the democratic opposition according to a pre-established mechanism.
"It is obvious that the lack of consolidation will play and is already playing into the hands of the authorities, completely disorienting democratically minded voters. We are convinced that without unity of action, the opposition will not be able to exert a tangible influence on the political situation in the country," the statement emphasizes.
Alexei Navalny's campaign manager Leonid Volkov told Vedomosti that he "did not understand the essence of the proposed structure": "In any case, we proceed from the fact that we will have to collect 300,000 signatures and go to the elections as self-nominated candidates." Ksenia Sobchak is also running as an independent candidate, said her campaign press secretary Ksenia Chudinova. Yabloko has not yet had time to familiarize itself with PARNAS's statement, said the party's press secretary Igor Yakovlev.
