In Minsk on Monday, an opposition politician, a former presidential candidate Nikolai Statkevich, was detained on Monday. About this Belarusian service Radio Liberty was told by his wife Marina Adamovich.
According to her, Statkevich was detained the day after the action of the memory of the victims of the Stalinist repressions near the Belorussian KGB building. On Tuesday, October 31, Statkevich planned to speak at sessions of the Eastern Partnership Parliamentary Assembly (Evronest) in Kyiv.
The leader of the unregistered party "People's Gromada" Nikolai Statkevich in December 2010 took part in the presidential election in Belarus. He was detained after dispersing the opposition rally. On May 26, 2011, he was sentenced to six years in prison in a colony of reinforced regime "for organizing riots." Statkevich was pardoned by President Alexander Lukashenko in August 2015. After that, the opposition was regularly detained and sentenced to short terms of imprisonment.
