65 years ago, on November 1, 1952, the United States for the first time in the world tested a 10-12 megaton hydrogen bomb in the atmosphere. The test was carried out on the Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Due to the large weight (about 74 tons) and dimensions, as well as due to the properties of liquid deuterium used as a fuel for thermonuclear fusion, the device could not be used as a weapon and was intended solely for experimental verification of the "two-stage" design proposed by Stanislav Ulam and Edward Teller.
