Warner Bros. and Amazon Studios began discussing a project for a Lord of the Rings series
Warner Bros. and the heirs of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien are in discussions with Amazon Studios about a Lord of the Rings trilogy series, Variety reports, citing people familiar with the matter.
Negotiations are at an early stage. According to the publication, Warner Bros. and Tolkien's heirs pitched the idea to various market participants, of which Amazon Studios was the most likely candidate.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is taking part in the talks. Variety notes that this is an atypical situation, and attributes this to the dismissal due to allegations of harassment of the head of Amazon Studios Roy Price, as well as the departure of other key employees.
The desire to get The Lord of the Rings is in line with the shift in programming policy at Amazon Studios initiated by Jeff Bezos this year.
