1967: well -powered rock

The forty-first release of the program "Music at Free" as its main topic chooses examples of the unfading glory of Rock and Roll. Rock Critic Artemy Troitsky recalls those unforgettable times when the great elders of experimental music were young, bold and energetic.

Today is the continuation of what we began to study about a month ago : albums compiled, compiled by English journalist John Savedja. In early October, we met an album called "1966", and now in line an album called "1967". Unfortunately, the 1968 album has not yet been released, but I hope that someday this will happen. This is in the literal sense of the word vintage rock, well -sustained high -quality music.

The disk, which gave us a reason and the reason to recall the events of half a century ago, has the subtitle of the year pop divided , "the year when the music of the pop was divided." In fact, 1967 is the time when historical, one might say, the split of all popular music, until then quite monolithic, what is called "pop", and what is called "underground". In practice, this meant that a brave detachment of musicians who said that we were not going to play entertaining music stood out from the army of pop artists, our task is not to make you happy, but to earn money ourselves-no, we are engaged in art! And so it all went-experimental rock, psychedelic rock, symphora and other progressive directions of rock music. The 1967th starting date is the 1967th, when the famous album of The Beatles “ Club of Lone Hearts of Sergeant Pepper ” was released and many other musical experiments were presented, in particular, Jimmy Hendrix’s debut album, the debut album of Doors and so on appeared.

Let us turn to this very year and go according to chronology, as it is done by John Saveja. January is the English Spencer Davis Group . Spencer Davis , a guitarist from the city of Birmingham, in 1963 gathered a group, the most noticeable participant of which was Steve Winwood , a keyboard player, organist and vocalist (later he played in different super groups, and also concerts solo). In January 1967, Single Spencer Davis Group called I'M A Man . You can find this track on the second American album Spencer Davis Group , which is called I'M A Man . Spencer Davis Group represents one of the areas of underground rock, namely a white blues, which later grew into hard rock.

The following figures of musical culture from 1967 are the legendary Soft Machine group. This is already psychedelic rock in its purest form. Soft Machine was considered the main rivals of Pink Floyd on the Niva Pop Psi-Psikhodelia. In March 1967, they had a song on a single called Feelin 'Reelin' Squeeelin ' , "Feel, dance, squeal." Kevin Eyers sang, the famous drummer controlled the soft machine, and later vocalist Robert Wyatt and eccentric guitarist David Ellen . The group arose in 1966 and existed, constantly updating the composition and drifting towards instrumental music, two decades.

In June 1967, a huge success fell to the defense of the song of Arieta Franklin Respect . This composition was composed by Otis Redding, a well-known American Soul-performer, and it became a hymn at the same time two directions of protest movements in the United States, and throughout the Western world on the one hand. Firstly, we are talking about the movement against racism and for civil rights-hence the name of the song, "respect". In the chorus, it is sung: all that I need from you is respect. Secondly, the song has also become a hymn of feminists. In the hit parades in the USA, the song took first place.

September 1967; Then I chose the Tomorrow psychedelic group. Unlike Soft Machine , which lasted several decades, I'm not talking about Pink Floyd , who are still alive, Tomorrow sang and played very shortly, from March 1967 to April 1968. The Vocalist group includes Keith West and subsequently became famous as part of the YES group, guitarist Steve Hawv . In September 1967, Tomorrow had a single with a rather popular song called Revolution (a year before The Beatles recorded their hit under the same name). Then, in 1967, Tomorrow played the famous Jam Seyeshen in the Main London Psychedelic club UFO ("UFO"), along with Jimmy Hendrix.

The next track is from France, and it is very exotic. The song was released on a single in October 1967 and is called this instrumental play by Psyche Rock , “Mental Rock”, and it was written by the French academic composer Pierre Henry , who composed mostly symphonies, oratorio and music for the theater. In this case, he wrote music for Maurice Bezhar’s ballet called “Mass for the present,” and there is a piece, just typical of psychedelic rock. This is how it sounds.

Two years later, in 1969, Pierre Henri had a joint work with the English rock band Spooky Tooth , the famous album called Ceremoy . We will complete the acquaintance with John Saveja's album "1967" another composition of the most typical period for this period. A virtuoso psychedelic little thing, difficult to build, with pace shifts, with tonality shifts: the English group Blossom Toes , the English group, like Tomorrow , which existed very shortly. Two famous guitarists solved in it as instrumentalists - Jim Krogan and Brian Godding . The debut album of Blossom Toes , called We Are Ever So Clean , opens with the LOOK at me iM You track, the same track came out on the single, "Look at me, I am you."
