The Communist Party of the Russian Federation decided to nominate Zyuganov for president in the 2018 elections

Party organizations of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation decided to nominate Gennady Zyuganov for the presidential elections in Russia in 2018. He himself stated this on the air of Channel One, RIA Novosti reports.

“I am the leader of the movement. All organizations put forward my candidacy,” he said.

Officially, the decision to nominate a candidate from the Communist Party will be made at the party congress in December 2017. The congress will take place after the official announcement of the elections.

• Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov ran four times for the presidency of Russia (in 1996, 2000, 2008 and 2012). Each time he came in second place; in 1996 he advanced to the second round, but lost to Boris Yeltsin. In 2004, the Communist Party nominated Nikolai Kharitonov for election, he also took second place.
• The presidential elections in the Russian Federation will be held on March 18, 2018. The intention to participate in them was announced, in particular, by opposition leader Alexei Navalny (the Central Election Commission says he will not register him due to a criminal record), TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak, one of the founders of Yabloko Grigory Yavlinsky, LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
• President Vladimir Putin has not yet announced plans to run for a fourth term, but Kremlin sources have repeatedly told Russian media that he will run in the election.
