Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed by phone with the leaders of the separatists of the so -called "DPR" and "LPR" Alexander Zakharchenko and Igor Plotnitsky exchange of prisoners in the Donbass. This was announced by the press secretary of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov. According to him, Zakharchenko and Plotnitsky support the idea of exchanging prisoners.

The initiative to exchange prisoners was made by the leader of the Ukrainian Choice movement Viktor Medvedchuk. He represents Ukraine in a humanitarian subgroup at negotiations in Minsk. Medvedchuk called on the president of Russia to "show humanism" and turn to the heads of the separatists to conduct an exchange of "all for all." According to him, by the end of this year, Ukraine is ready to free about three hundred people and expects 74 prisoners from pro -Russian separatists.

According to the Ukrainian side , the self -proclaimed republics hold at least 144 citizens of Ukraine. Kyiv managed to determine the whereabouts of 87 of them. For three years of armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, more than three thousand Ukrainian citizens were freed from captivity or found. About four hundred more were missing.
