1997 Terrorist attack in Luxor

Twenty years ago, on November 17, 1997, militants from the Egyptian Islamist group Al-Gamaa al-Islamiya killed 58 foreign tourists and 4 Egyptians who were visiting the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor. 26 people were injured. Among the dead were citizens of Switzerland, Germany and the UK, including a 5-year-old girl.

The six terrorists were dressed in Egyptian security uniforms and armed with machine guns and machetes. After the attack, they tried to escape, but, surrounded by Egyptian police, committed suicide. After the terrorist attack, the flow of tourists to Egypt was significantly reduced.
