year 2012. Repeal of the Jackson-Vanik Amendment

Five years ago, on November 20, 2012, the US Congress repealed the Jackson-Vanik amendment to Russia, which prohibits granting most favored nation status in trade with the United States to countries that prevent emigration, as well as violate other human rights. This amendment to the law on trade was adopted in 1974 in connection with the existing restrictions on the emigration of Soviet citizens. Currently, the Jackson-Vanik amendment continues to operate in relation to a number of countries, including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
