The speaker of the Zimbabwe parliament Jacob Mudenda read out a letter from the country's president Robert Mugaba, in which he reported an “immediate and voluntary resignation”. Hearing this news, the members of the parliament began to applaud and dance. On the streets of the capital of the country, Harara also began the holiday. Robert Mugaba led Zimbabwe for 37 years.
