Member of the Federation Council of Russia Suleiman Kerimov was detained by French police in Nice, TASS reports on Tuesday, November 21 .
The reason for the detention has not been officially announced. Karimov was reportedly taken to the police station. Russian diplomatic staff have come to see him and will provide the senator with consular support.
According to Reuters , Kerimov was detained in a tax evasion case.
Kerimov has long chosen Nice as a place of residence on the Cote d'Azur, and this is not the first time he has been involved in accidents here. In November 2006, the billionaire was in a car accident in Nice: a Ferrari Enzo, in which he was driving along the Promenade des Anglais with TV presenter Tina Kandelaki, lost control, crashed into a tree and caught fire. After the accident, the billionaire did not appear in public for a long time: he was in hospitals, underwent rehabilitation and wore a special suit filled with silicone to cope with constant chills.
And in March 2017, police raided the villa Hier, which allegedly belongs to the senator - according to the local newspaper Nice Matin, his family regularly visits here. The reason for the investigative actions was some transactions carried out with the villa (its area is 12,000 sq.m, it is one of the largest mansions on the Cote d'Azur).
The official owner of Villa Hier, as well as neighboring Medy Roc, Lexa and Fiorella (all located on the site of the former Villa Pellerin), is the Swiss financier Alexander Studhalter. Their total area exceeds 90,000 sq. m.
The police suspected that the transaction was carried out through Switzerland using financial schemes. Thus, the official sale price of Villa Hier, at least for French taxation, was €35 million. However, according to Nice Matin, €61 million was transferred to the seller's accounts from Switzerland. The seller was a wealthy Corsican family.
Since the end of 2014, when the investigation into this case began, the tax authorities have already confiscated property for € 17 million - this amount included real estate, works of art, jewelry and luxury cars. In the spring of this year, Nice Matin sources claimed that the tax authorities had the opportunity to confiscate all the property attributed to Kerimov in Nice.
