
The Judicial Chamber of the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia sentenced the former army commander of the Bosnian Serbs Ratko Mladic to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. The decision was announced by the chairman of the judge Alphonse Or, TASS reports .
The indictment of Mladic contains five main points - the persecution, extermination, murder, deportation and violent movement, as well as crimes against humanity during the civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992-1995. An additional five conclusions contains accusations of murders, terror, illegal attacks on civilians, the seizure of hostages and violation of the rules of war.
In particular, the general was accused of organizing the murder of seven thousand Muslim men and boys in the village of Srebrenitsa in 1995. He was also accused of commanding troops besieging the city of Sarajevo. The siege lasted about three and a half years. During this time, more than 10 thousand people died in the city.
Mladic himself did not admit guilt. His lawyers also insisted that during the process that lasted more than four years, the fault of their client was not proved, and demanded an excuse for the sentence.
At a meeting on December 7, 2016, the prosecutor MTBU asked for Mladic a life imprisonment .
The authorities of Serbia arrested Mladic on May 26, 2011, after he was hiding from justice for 16 years. A few days later he was given to the Hague . MTBU accused Mladic of genocide, crimes against humanity. On July 4, 2011, Mladic refused to find himself guilty or innocent in court.
Bosnia and Herzegovina announced in 1992 about leaving Yugoslavia, after which a war began in the republic with the participation of Bosnian Muslims, Serbs and Croats, which lasted until 1995. The exact number of victims of the conflict has not been officially established. According to independent experts, about 100 thousand people were killed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the beginning of the conflict, the country's population was more than four million people.
In March 2016, MTBU found the ex-leader of the Bosnian Serbs, pleaded Karadzhich guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to 40 years in prison . Karadzhich was accused of genocide, involvement in genocide, murders, deportation and other inhuman actions against Muslims, Croats and other civilian population of non -regional nationality. In particular, the court recognized Karadzhich as responsible crime in Srebrenitsa and during the siege of Sarajevo. At the same time, the court decided to remove from the ex-leader of the Bosnian Serbs one of the two accusations of the genocide. Thus, Karadzhich was found guilty of 10 of 11 points of charge.
