The Enlightener prizes turned 10 years old.
A three-hobby turned to members of the jury of past years and to the authors of popular science books with a request to comment on the results of a decade of the prize.
We publish the answers and opinions.

Sergey Popov, Astrophysicist, Laureate of the Prize "For Fidelity of Science":
It is difficult to overestimate the contribution to the development of education in Russia, which was made by the Dynasty Foundation and the associated projects. These are grants for students and young scientists, and a large publishing program, trips and invitation of researchers, postdrods, library program, conducting popular science lectures, open lessons and master classes across the country. If you want, this is a huge beautiful cake with many delicious layers and decorations. In a sense, a cherry on this cake is a “Enlightener” award, which itself exists within the framework of a large program, where there are science festivals, and individual exit events, and much more. Below is about a cherry, not a cake.
So, the prize exists within the framework of a diverse project and should be considered that way. Perhaps this explains some of its features. This is not only the need to put forward nominees (the organizing committee, obviously, does not pretend that it can take all the best books on its own, this is really not easy), but the author’s consent requirement for nomination (in fact, this can be regarded as consent to participation in the programs related to the premium, so the requirement is quite reasonable).
It is also worth noting that the book can be nominated only once (we will return to this). In this sense, it is wrong to consider the award as an attempt to identify the best books (and only). The maximum can be about identifying the best among the declared. But then further the winning authors (and their books, as well as publishers) get more opportunities to participate in the popularization of science. What is important.
As you know, the selection of winners is in three stages: the formation of a long list, then-a short list, and, finally, at the ceremony-the culmination of the festival-the winner is announced. It is significant here that society nevertheless perceives the final stage precisely as the choice of the best popular science book of the year. Plus - as a definition of a prize for the next year (the winners have to give lectures, etc.). And of course, for many this is a task of some trend. And it is here, in my opinion, that not everything looks clear.
Before moving, in fact, to some criticism, I will make another reservation. I am well aware that in this case a prize is a purely private business. And, in principle, its organizers should not give either me or anyone else a report. Do not like it - do your own. Nevertheless, since the influence of the world of popularization of science in our country is extremely large, this social significance justifies the discussion.
The main problem, in my opinion, is that the final solutions (and sometimes individual decisions on books in Long and Short Listers) look inexplicably random (I can only judge a bonus in the natural science nomination). As if the jury members in the finale simply took four matches, one broke off-and let someone pull out the winner. If, in the case of a long list of fluctuations, there are always possible (there are many books-and strictly motivated to compose everyone that suits the set of 25 works, no one will succeed), then in the case of a short leaf, and even more so the winner, this looks strange.
It is quite difficult to understand the unified logic of the final choice, looking at the list of laureates over 10 years. At the same time, it is usually impossible to read or hear detailed comments on why just such a choice was made. In one year, the winner can be a very serious book, hardly designed for a mass reader, but at the same time certainly good in his segment. And after a year or two, if there are equally important and strong-strong science-popular works in the short list, which obviously in their field will become a standard for all seriously interested in this topic in their field, a quite light mass book from a journalist wins.
Everything would be nothing (that Nobel - they can give for the abstruse drama, then Bob Dylan), but here the situation is fundamentally different. Firstly (although this is a less important point), you can only go with a specific work once. And I imagine the feelings of a colleague who has a book, which is the result of a long serious work, loses “in the last turn”, for example, journalistic work for reading in transport so as not to get bored (I do not want, of course, to create the impression that all journalistic books are “lightweight” or that such books are written only by journalists).
At the same time, the jury’s intentions were unknown in advance (“This year the prize plans to celebrate first of all works intended for the general public”). Secondly, the influence of the "enlightener" as a premium on the popular science environment in Russia seems very significant. We simply do not have another authoritative premium for popular science books (since 2017, the Non-Fixhne Prize will be awarded, let's see how it will show itself). Therefore, the winning books (their theme, style of presentation, etc.) and authors inevitably find themselves in the center of excessive attention. Sometimes it seems that the members of the jury of the prize are not aware of this.

Apparently, the publishers complained more than once, we do not have an established mechanism for the mass emergence of high-quality independent reviews on popular science books in the media (the TRV-hobby is one of the exceptions, but only a small share of publications is covered here). It is not easy to orient in the world of scientpop for the reader. The presence of some alternative ratings (well, or bonuses, although it is not necessary to distribute cookies at all) could solve this problem. Someone would concentrate on a slight genre, someone on serious books where not a bright presentation is important, but the thoroughness of the presentation, someone on books affecting socially significant topics. But there is no one in sufficient volume. Therefore, the “enlightener” de facto largely performs this function, conducting selection and thus giving recommendations.
Thus, the announcement of the winner is a rather significant signal to the community associated with the popularization of science. But sometimes it is not easy to decipher this signal. Personally, I am very confused by the lack of detailed motivations when choosing a winner. It leads to a rather strange discussion of the results of the prize in social networks and blogs, when people compete in inventing different conspiracy theories when determining the winner. At the same time, the theories of the conspiracy have no chance, because any of them usually implies some logic and continuity in decisions.
Any consistent approach would be good and would form a prize face. Key criteria can be very different, but it would be nice to clearly form them and strictly adhere to them, and in each case to clearly pronounce (in the form of a press release), how a specific choice is linked to these basic principles. With a different choice of approach and winners will be different. These can be serious books, albeit inaccessible to the mass reader, but for a long time becoming a certain standard in any field. On the contrary, there may be books for the widest audience, conveying, albeit in a very simplified (and, apparently, enticing) form, real modern scientific knowledge. Maybe something else. There may be a clear alternation of genres. In the meantime, often the announcement of the winner occurs under the motto: "Come - we will surprise you ... and leave you in bewilderment." (This is well illustrated by the words of the chairman of the jury regarding the winner of 2017: “The non -triviality of the decision was largely facilitated by the anniversary year of the prize.” )
As a result, if a long list every year gives an excellent panorama of the diversity of good popular science books originally written in Russian, if the short list with rare exceptions serves as a good recommendation that read, then the list of winners, in my opinion, looks only like a random sample of the short list. Moreover, the reasons for the choice remain a mystery.
For me personally, this situation means that I will not give permission to nominate my new book for the prize (and I will read the lecture as part of any program with pleasure). I hope that over time, the decision to choose winners and finalists will become a more understandable public. Yes, and it is, in the end, not in the prize, but in enlightenment, in the popularization of knowledge. The cake is more important than the cherries.

Viktor Sonkin, laureate of the Enlightener Award 2013 for the book “There was Rome”, member of the 2014 Jury:
- What books, in your opinion, should become the winners of the Enlightener Award? When you were a member of the jury, what was the priority for you when choosing the best books?
-The best popular science books-this seems to be quite obvious. When I was a member of the jury, the priority for me was most likely the same things that for all the members of the jury in all convocations - the importance of the topic and the brightness of its presentation. Another thing is that both everyone understands both in their own way.
-If you take the winning books in 10 years, then does this set some trend for popular science literature? Do you see some continuity in the decisions of the jury for a number of years that would form the face of the prize?
-I see a colossal upsurge in the market of popular science literature in Russian-this is evidenced by everyone who is associated with the bonus, book critics and readers. It seems to me, it seems to me not so much about continuity as about a significant complication of the task: one thing is to choose the best book from fifty, another out of several thousand. It seems to me that everything is in order with the “face of the prize” in general: the award is trying to highlight the most significant popular science books in Russian.
- How is the problem of the lack of specialized experts in the jury solved? How small the jury helps, makes decision-making in a situation where most often a jury member can explicitly evaluate only one or two books from a short list?
- It does not help and does not interfere. After all, not scientific books are evaluated, but by popular science; Competent humanitarism does not need a scientific degree on the Assyrian wedin painting to evaluate the quality of the popular book about this (and if the book is bad, this will be clear). This is partly true for natural science and mathematical disciplines. In any case, the profiles are incomparably more than there can be experts in the jury; An attempt to “improve” this situation is doomed to an undoubted failure.
- How do you feel about the rule that one book can be nominated only once? And also to the rule that the author of the book should agree with the nomination for the prize?
- to the first - difficult; It is clear that a beautiful book in some year may (including for random reasons) cannot be defeated, and in another, it will win. But, on the other hand, a prize is not only a mechanism for encouraging books and authors, but also an important detail of the book process in the country, and in this sense the solution is correct, and let the good author write another book. I did not understand the second question: what else could it be?
- How do you feel about the fact that the decisions of the winner often look too unpredictable, and therefore controversial? It would be desirable, in your opinion, to introduce a detailed motivation about the reasons for choosing a particular book?
- No. This would only increase the number of disputes. Let me quote the “entertaining Greece” by M. L. Gasparov: “In general, the Olympic judges were honestly judged. Before the competition, they had to check the horses allowed to the races, and at the same time gave two vows: firstly, judging by conscience and, secondly, not to explain to anyone why they judged this and not otherwise. The Greeks understood that there are also cases when you feel the right decision, but you cannot explain. ”
-Is it worth it, in your opinion, to introduce more nominations, so that, say, a serious popular science work does not compete with a lighter book addressed to a wide reader? If so, what nominations would you offer?
- No, in any case. Special nominations are announced every year, and this is fine. Zimin spoke about the possibility of celebrating the best foreign science books in the future-this is also a great idea. And an increase in the number of basic nominations will wash out the concept of a bonus - we have seen this more than once. The only thing I would do in the anniversary year in a different way was to share the main award not only in the humanitarian, but also in the natural science nomination; It seems to me that it would be Olympic the right decision. But only in the anniversary year.

Alexander Meshcheryakov, laureate of the Enlightener Award 2012 for the book “Emperor Meiji and His Japan”, a member of the jury of 2013:
- How is the problem of the lack of specialized experts in the jury solved? How small the jury helps, makes decision-making in a situation where most often a jury member can explicitly evaluate only one or two books from a short list?
“The jury should not be too big.” But it seems to me that at least one specialist should be in the main humanitarian disciplines (history, literature, linguistics). If there is no such specialist, then the practice of an external review should be introduced in which a qualified person will tell how much the reported corresponds to the truth.
- How do you feel about the rule that one book can be nominated only once?
- The nominations of the same book can be as much as you like. The book from this becomes neither better nor worse.
- How do you feel about the fact that the decisions of the winner often look too unpredictable, and therefore controversial? It would be desirable, in your opinion, to introduce a detailed motivation about the reasons for choosing a particular book?
- A competition is such a thing when there are always dissatisfied. Crime is included in the rules of the game. Detailed motivation is not needed, it is an extra target for criticism.
-Is it worth it, in your opinion, to introduce more nominations? If so, what nominations would you offer?
- I would introduce a separate nomination "Biography". Still, biographical works are very in great demand and make up a genre separate from the “reasoning” literature.

Vladimir Surdin, Laureate of the Enlightener Award 2012, jury member of 2013:
- What books, in your opinion, should become the winners of the Enlightener Award? When you were a member of the jury, what was the priority for you when choosing the best books?
- How many members were in the jury, so many priorities. Opinions took shape and averaged, and a rather balanced decision was obtained. In fact, everyone had their own idea of what the popularization of science should be based on their own baggage of knowledge and experience. Each of us thought about it in our own way. I perceive popularization as the ability to light interest in some subject. And which book should defeat? What wins, this was supposed to win.
- Such rock, Fatality?
- Sometimes they say: this book should have defeated, but it lost. No, what defeated, this is what won! Any bonus is a sport with an indispensable element of good luck. A good boxer can happen a runny nose, and he will suddenly beat him in the ring. In the same way, a good book may have some kind of unpleasant moment. It happens that some area of science is not in Tabor or some author is unpleasant for most jury members. Or vice versa - the personality is attractive, and the book is weak. But everyone says: “Oh, what a person, I know him, he has his own here, a shirt-party, let's give him a bonus!”
I repeat once again: the existence of the premium itself is important; It doesn’t matter who in this year specifically and with which book won. No one remembers all the Nobel laureates, no one remembers even erroneously chosen winners when there were stronger applicants. But everyone knows: Nobel stimulates science, and the “Enlightener” bonus stimulates writing and in general work in this area. And thank God!
- Your words are contrary to the fact that the book can be nominated for the competition only once. Suppose that this year is a bad moment for her - it turns out that she cannot be nominated next year. How do you feel about the rule that the book can be put up for the Enlightener Award only once?
- I don't really like this rule either. Indeed, there were such years when the prize was not awarded, because there were no strong candidates. And the day before were strong and unapproaches. But I did not install the prize, it is not for me to change these rules. In itself, a nomination for this prize or getting into the final is already an honor. What if next year there will be no bonus at all? In our country there is anything.
- D. B. Zimin and his son made so that the prize will still exist 10-15 years and the authors will be able to receive cash prizes.
- I think that after so many years, the money has already faded into the background. Even if the "Enlightener" is not able to give a good prize - and so far it has been very good - it will still be a great honor.
-If you take the winning books in 10 years, then do they set some kind of trend for popular science literature?
- I think not.

What is more important?
Rather, no than yes.
