US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. It is reported by Reuters with reference to the president’s speech in the White House.

Trump called his decision a “very belated” step on the way of settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict. “Although the previous presidents have this (the recognition of Jerusalem by the capital. - Ed.) The basis was the norm contained in the law, which allows the president to delay the execution of the document for six months. Every six months, Trump's predecessors issued a corresponding decree.

During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to recognize Jerusalem the capital of Israel. He declared his intention to restore close relations with the Jewish state, "destroyed" in the presidency of Obama.

The representative of the Palestinian autonomy in the United States regarded the decision of Trump as a declaration of war in the Middle East. In turn, the Pope Francis called for preserving the status quo Jerusalem in order to avoid a global conflict. China and Russia expressed concern about Trump's plans, referring to the danger of armed confrontation.

Earlier it was reported that the planned decision of Trump does not mean a change in US policy regarding the borders of the Palestinian autonomy. It was noted that Washington is ready, if the consent of both sides of the conflict, to support its settlement based on the creation of two independent states.

On Tuesday, Trump discussed his initiative with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President of the Palestinian Autonomy Mahmud Abbas, King of Jordan Abdullah, Saudi King Salman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattahu As-Sisi. In them, the US president confirmed his commitment to promoting peace negotiations between Israel and Palestinian autonomy.

Meanwhile, in the Arab countries, Trump's plans caused a sharp reaction. The Egyptian president said that measures should not be taken, which "make it impossible to establish peace in the Middle East."

The United States strengthened security measures in its embassies in the Middle East. The US Consulate in Jerusalem called for employees not to visit a number of areas of the city, as well as Judea and Samaria - the area on the western coast of Jordan.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the six -day war. According to the law of the country, the city is the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish state. Meanwhile, Palestinian autonomy claims East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state.
