Putin announced his participation in the elections
Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with employees of the GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod, announced that he will run for president in the 2018 elections, Kommersant reports.
“I will put forward my candidacy for the post of President of the Russian Federation,” he said at a rally-concert dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Gorky Automobile Plant.
According to the head of state, “there is probably no better place or better reason to announce this,” Interfax quotes Putin as saying.
Putin's words about his intention to run for a fourth term were a response to a question from one of the plant's employees, Artem Baranov, who recalled the president's words that he would put forward his candidacy for the post of head of state if the people supported him.
"So, today in this hall everyone without exception supports you. Vladimir Vladimirovich, give us a gift, announce your decision, because we are for you, GAZ is for you," the employee of the enterprise said.
Baranov assured Vedomosti that he had not coordinated his request with anyone: "I simply took the initiative." He noted that the question of Putin's nomination was "on everyone's mind, both in the hall and on stage."
Earlier on Wednesday, Putin met with young people at the Volunteer of the Year award ceremony, where he promised to take into account the opinions of the audience that supported him as president.
