25 years ago, on December 12, 1992, the constituent general meeting of the Human Rights Center "Memorial" was held.
The human rights group with the same name has been operating since 1989, the first meeting of the human rights center was held in January 1991. Then the constituent documents were prepared. The organization was registered in 1993.
The Memorial arose around the problem of restoring historical truth about mass political repressions in the Soviet Union. It soon became obvious that the memory of terror and actual human rights were inextricably linked. The Memorial became both a historical, educational and human rights organization. Now the Memorial International Society includes 74 organizations, including 10 operating outside Russia.
The Memorial human rights center explores violations of human rights and the norms of international humanitarian law in the zones of mass conflicts, provides legal assistance to refugees, and draws up lists of political prisoners.
In 2013, the prosecutor's office demanded from the PC "Memorial" to register as a foreign agent. Human rights activists challenged this decision in court, but lost.
The Council of the PC "Memorial" is headed by Alexander Cherkasov.
