Under Gerald Ford, she became an assistant to Henry Kissinger, at that time a Secretary of State. When Republican Ford was replaced by Democrat Jimmy Carter, Kathlin continued her education first in Oxford, then at the Massachusetts Technological Institute. Its specialization was strategic nuclear weapons of the USSR and China. She did not add her doctoral dissertation because she went to work in the Ronald Reagan administration. But the dissertation became the basis of the Reagan Star Wars program.

She worked in the apparatus of the Senate Committee on the Armed Forces, then moved to the Pentagon, where she first became the speaker of the Minister of Defense of Caspara Wineberger, then the press secretary of the department. It is called the developer of the concept of limited military intervention, which later became known as the doctrine of Colin Powell.

In 1985, she married a banker-investor Alan McFarland and turned into a housewife and caring mother of five children, including two adopted ones, but maintained connections in political circles. In 1992, she learned that her brother Michael is a gay, considered it a shame of the family and stopped relations with her parents, accusing her father of sexual violence towards her and her brother. In 2006, the Republicans were looking for a candidate who could compete with Hillary Clinton in elections to the Senate from the state of New York, and McFarland decided to try his luck with the blessing of party bosses.
