Vladimir Putin said that the March presidential election would not go as a candidate from any party, but a self-nominee. According to Vedomosti, he made such a message at the annual large press conference.

Putin did not specify who will be the chief of his election headquarters.

Putin announced the participation of the election on December 6 at a rally-concert in honor of the 85th anniversary of the Gorky Automobile Plant in Nizhny Novgorod. On the 8th, the media reported that the election headquarters could be headed by either the head of the presidential administration Anton Vaino or his first deputy, the head of the internal policy department, Sergei Kiriyenko.

Kiriyenko assured the audience that "all violations will be harshly suppressed." A year ago, Kiriyenko at a meeting with vice-governors who oversee domestic policies said that the turnout in the elections should amount to 70 percent, and 70 percent of the vote should be given for the “main candidate”. However, the study conducted at the end of November of this year of the Levada Center indicates that only 58 percent of citizens intend to vote in the nearest elections. At the same time, sociologists predict the real turnout even less - 53-55 percent.

At the beginning of 2017, amendments were specially made to the law on the presidential election, which allowed the vote next year to the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea - March 18. The main opposition candidate - the leader of the Party of Progress Alexei Navalny - is not allowed to the polls, referring to the presence of conditional criminal records.
