Telegram representatives turned to the UN due to the threat of messenger blocking in Russia

The human rights organization "Agora", representing the interests of Telegram, turned to the UN with a request to influence the situation around the messenger. The Agora believes that in the coming weeks, Telegram can be blocked in Russia. This was announced in his telegram channel the head of the organization Pavel Chikov.

In a letter to the Human Rights of the UN Human Rights to David Kaye, human rights activists indicated that recently the Meshchansky court of Moscow recognized a fine of 800 thousand rubles, imposed on the messenger for refusing to provide the FSB for decipitation of correspondence. Lawyers also recalled that in the summer of 2016 an anti -terrorist package of amendments was adopted, obliging instant messengers to provide these data.

“Agora” asks the UN to recommend the Government of the Russian Federation “to refrain from expanding the practice of arbitrary interference in citizens' right to freedom of expression, privacy and anonymity, including online,” writes Kommersant.
