Arseny Roginsky died

On Monday morning, the chairman of the board of Memorial, the former Soviet Politsyk Arseny Roginsky, died. This was announced at his FB page by the chairman of the Council of the Human Rights Center "Memorial" Alexander Cherkasov.

Roginsky was born on March 30, 1946 in the city of Velsk, Arkhangelsk Region, where his father, an engineer from Leningrad, was serving a link. In 1968 he graduated from the History and Philology Faculty of Tartu University.

At the end of the university, he settled in Leningrad. He was engaged in the history of Russia in the 1920s, in particular the destruction of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party and subsequent repression. Since 1975 he edited samizdat collections of historical works "Memory"; Since 1978, these collections have been published abroad.

In 1977 and 1979, the KGB conducted searches from the Roginsky. After the second search, the historian was fired from work - he was a teacher in an evening school. In 1981, he was strongly convinced of the emigration, but he did not.

In the same 1981, Roginsky was arrested on a fabricated charges of falsification of documents and sentenced to four years. As the last word in the court, the “position of the historian in the Soviet Union” said.

In 1985, he was released, completely serving his term. Completely rehabilitated in 1992.

In 1988-1989, Roginsky acted as one of the founders of the Memorial. The post of chairman of the board of the Company has been occupied since 1998.

In 1989, the book compiled by the historian “Memoirs of the peasants of the Tolstos. 1910-1930s” was published in the USSR.
