The head of the Council of Municipal Deputies of the Krasnoselsky District of Moscow, Ilya Yashin, said that he would file a lawsuit on December 18 against Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin because of an attempt to ban the "Day of Free Elections" scheduled for December 24.
“Sobyanin’s subordinates, exceeding their authority, interfere with the preparation of the holiday. With the help of the prosecutor's office, administrative pressure is organized on us, which risks developing into force. There is no doubt that Sergei Sobyanin personally stands behind the attempt to brazenly interfere with our powers, ”Yashin wrote on Facebook.
He insists that "Free Election Day" is a "legal and organized in compliance with all procedures" holiday.
“I also consider it important to draw attention to what is happening to the Central Election Commission. The Election Commission confirmed the will of the citizens who gave me and my colleagues powers in the Krasnoselsky district. Therefore, I ask the head of the CEC of the Russian Federation, Ella Panfilova, to contact Sergei Sobyanin and remind him of the rights of local self-government and the inadmissibility of interfering with our powers, ”adds the politician, noting that he will hold a solo picket on December 18 at the main entrance to the Central Election Commission of Russia.
The Moscow authorities have previously stated that the "Day of Free Elections" is a mass event that requires approval. Yashin insists that the holiday, organized by the decision of the municipal deputies of the district, does not need to be agreed with the mayor's office.
