The US Treasury imposed sanctions under the "Magnitsky Act" against Artem Chaika, the son of Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika.
According to the US Treasury, Artem Chaika used his father's position and opportunities to dishonestly receive state property and government contracts, as well as put pressure on competitors.
In total, 15 people fell under the sanctions on December 21, including the daughter of the late President of Uzbekistan Gulnara Karimova, as well as more than 30 companies.
The list includes former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler, Serbian businessman and arms dealer Slobodan Tesic, and former Kyiv Berkut commander Sergei Kusyuk, among others.
The US Treasury Department said in a press release that the sanctions were imposed as part of the “new regime against human rights violators and corrupt officials around the world” that the Donald Trump administration introduced.
- Artem Chaika is a businessman, the son of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika. He and his brother Igor became widely known after the FBK film "The Seagull", which stated, in particular, that he could be involved in the raider seizure of the business. Yuri Chaika called the FBK's investigation custom-made. In his opinion, the customer of the film is the head of Hermitage Capital, William Browder, who was convicted in absentia in Russia.
- The “Magnitsky Law” was adopted in the United States after the death in a Moscow pre-trial detention center of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who worked with the Hermitage Capital fund. Under this law, the United States imposes sanctions against people who are considered involved in human rights violations. They are banned from entering the country, and their assets in the United States are frozen.
- Initially, the law concerned only human rights violations in Russia, but since the end of 2016, its effect has been extended to the whole world. A similar law has been passed in Canada.
