The Russian Ambassador responded to the US proposal to rename the square to the embassy in honor of Nemtsov

The Ambassador of Russia to the United States Anatoly Antonov commented on the proposal of US legislators to rename the square to the embassy in honor of the murdered politician Boris Nemtsov. In an interview with RTVI , he said that Russian diplomats would make any decision.

"To the American authorities to decide where, when and in honor of whom to name this or that area, one or another street ... We will make any decision of the United States on this subject," he said. However, as RIA Novosti notes, the ambassador agreed: it is important for the Russian side that the decision to rename will pursue “noble goals” and is not made “in the peak of the Russian Federation”.

Answering the question of what emotions he personally will cause work at a new address, Antonov said: "I will have no emotions. I worked as, how my comrades worked, so we will work."

In the spring of 2017, the profile committee of the Washington city council unanimously approved the draft law on renaming part of the street opposite the Russian Embassy in memory of the Russian opposition policy in 2015 Boris Nemtsov. Initially, the proposal to name one of the streets of Washington by the name of Nemtsov was nominated in 2016 by the Senator-Republican from the state of Florida Mark Rubio. In case of approval of the initiative to the city council, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the United States will receive the address "Boris Nemtsov Plaza, house 1".

Boris Nemtsov was shot dead late in the evening of February 27, 2015 on the Big Moskvoretsky Bridge, when he returned home with his companion, Ukrainian model Anna Duritskaya. The killer released six bullets in Nemtsov’s back, four of them reached the goal. The verdict to the defendants in the case of the murder of Nemtsov was issued on July 13. A native of Chechnya Zaur Dadaev was recognized as the direct executor of the murder, he received 20 years of a maximum security colony.
