The investigation of the case of Russian interference in the US election began after the adviser to the pre -election campaign of Donald Trump on foreign policy, George Papadopoulos, “drinking strongly,” told the Australian diplomat that Moscow has a political compromising on the candidate from the democratic party Hillary Clinton. It is reported by The New York Times with reference to sources.
In May 2016, Papandopoulos met in a London bar with Australian diplomat Alexander Downer. The adviser to the Trump campaign said that he recently learned about the presence of "thousands of letters" that compromise Clinton. After that, the Australian officials transmitted information to their American colleagues.
The publication characterizes papadopoulos as a "impudent and boastful" person. At the same time, although “some of Trump’s consultants ridiculed him as an insignificant voluntary volunteer of the campaign or“ coffee boy ”, interviews and new documents show that he“ remained influential ”during the entire election campaign, Nyt notes.
On July 27, the papadopoulos was arrested on charges of deliberately false testimonies given by the FBI on January 27 of this year. A day earlier, the FBI searchedPaul Manafort, the former chief of staff of Trump .
In October, a statement by papadopoulos was published, in which he announced his attempts to arrange a meeting of the presidential candidate with Vladimir Putin in early 2016. Around March 14, 2016, the document says, the papadopulos, who at that time already knew that he would receive work at Trump's headquarters, met in Italy with a certain London professor, who claimed to have serious ties in the ruling circles of Russia. The professor became interested in his acquaintances only when he found out that he was going to work with Trump. It was he who said that Russia has thousands of emails containing Clinton.
On March 21, it was officially announced that the papadopoulos was being taken to Trump's headquarters. Three days later, in London, the professor introduced the American to the Russian woman, whom he introduced to him as Putin’s niece, who has connections with large Russian officials. The adviser announced a meeting of colleagues in the headquarters and said that he intends to discuss with the Russian Relations of Russia and the USA to Donald Trump's presidency. The boss approved the actions of the papadopoulos and only advised not to give the Russians any obligations.
Subsequently, the Note to the presentation says, Papadopulos found out that in fact, the Russian niece was Putin’s niece. In addition, he hoped that a new acquaintance and professor would present it to the Russian ambassador in London, but these calculations did not materialize.
However, even before this, on March 31, Papadopulos met in Washington with Trump himself and his foreign policy advisers and stated that he had ties that would allow organizing a meeting of the candidate with Putin.
Around April 27, 2016, Papadopoulos told colleagues in the headquarters that he received a lot of calls confirming that Putin wanted to accept Trump. In May, the London professor informed him that he spoke with "colleagues from the Russian Foreign Ministry" and they confirmed that they were "ready for cooperation." Further in the same month, the papadopoulos notified his colleagues twice that the meeting should take place.
On June 19, the adviser, having talked with a certain person "related to the Russian Foreign Ministry," he said that he intends to meet with Russian officials "not for recording." However, he could not hold this meeting.
