1938. Vasil Stus was born

80 years ago, January 6, 1938, Vasil Stus, a Ukrainian poet, a dissident and political prisoner were born.

In 1965, before public watching the film "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" in the Kiev cinema "Ukraine", he publicly spoke in a protest against the wave of arrests of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Stus also reasonably accused the KGB of killing the artist and dissident Alla Gorskaya. He repeatedly wrote letters of protest to the authorities against the restoration of the cult of personality and persecution of dissenters.

In 1972, Stus was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 2 years of reference for human rights activities under the article "Anti -Soviet agitation and propaganda." After serving the sentence, he did not refuse dissident. In 1980, he was again arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5 years of exile. He died in 1985 in the Perm-36 camp as a result of a hunger strike. In 1990, he was completely rehabilitated. In 2005, Vasily Stus was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.
