US astronaut John Young, who walked on the moon twice, has died at the age of 87. His death is reported by NASA. According to the agency, Young died on January 5 from the effects of pneumonia.

Young has been with NASA since 1962 and became the first astronaut to go into space six times.

“John belonged to a group of space pioneers whose courage and commitment led our country to the first space achievements. But he was not satisfied with this and continued to work for a long time after his six space flights, ”said agency head Robert Lightfoot in a statement.

John Young made his first space flight in March 1965 on the Gemini 3 spacecraft. In July 1966, he led the Gemini 10 mission.
In May 1969, he participated in the flight of the Apollo 10 spacecraft, which preceded the landing of astronauts on the moon. And in April 1972, as the commander of the Apollo 16 spacecraft, John Young made a landing on the Earth's satellite.
In April 1981, Young commanded the first manned flight of the Columbia under the Space Shuttle program. The last time the astronaut flew into space was in 1983 as the commander of the STS-9 mission on the Columbia spacecraft. In total, he spent 835 hours in space.
