St. Petersburg designer Igor Nikolaev released a series of collages with iconic characters of the years ending with the number “seven” - from 1957 to 2017. Thus, he played on the “Give me back my 2007” meme.
According to Nikolaev, 1957 was the first “give me back mine” year thanks to the spread of television and the availability of rock music on records. The author of the project noted that in all the “seventh” years, characters significant for mass culture appeared. He wondered whether 2017 would be on par with them.
“... The first truly mass popularity thanks to television, the first serious protest of parents against teenage hobbies, the first immortal rock hits. This was the first “give me back my” year.” “... The era of mass festivals, soft drugs, free love, an endless number of talented bands and rock heroes who became an example for future generations.” “Perhaps the saddest chapter in the world of rock music. Melancholy becomes the main theme of creativity, the musicians deal with their internal problems and they don’t care about your riots. The audience of listeners is shrinking, and electronics are taking over the minds of generations. Raves, discos, drugs - this is what motivates young people of the wild 90s..." “Ten years have passed since 2007, he has not returned and will probably never return. We lost rock and somehow found hip-hop again. But when it comes to self-expression and fashion, does it really matter what the style of music is called? The year has just ended, the question arises: is there a desire to return it, as you once wanted in 2007? Will the ice melt in the hearts of former teenagers years later, just as September burns in the hearts of those returning to 2007? We'll see!"
